Based upon the word of God, the wives of Deacons, titled as Deaconess in the Baptist Church, are
“… to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.”
I Timothy 3:11 (NIV)
Deaconesses are servants of the church, using their leadership skills to help the church grow and fulfill its mission. Deaconess should promote spiritual growth in the church fostering peace, love and Christian unity. They work alongside the Pastor and Deacons to enhance the spiritual life of the church and minister to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of its members.
In the Evangelistic Baptist Church of Christ, Deaconess have a number of duties, including preparing the Holy Communion elements, assisting with baptismal preparations, mentoring baptismal candidates, providing counseling or mentoring for the young women in the church and community. Deaconess, along with the Pastor, Deacons and entire church are to assist the poor, visit the sick or elderly and provide comfort to those in mourning thereby carrying out the mission of the church.
